Fr Tony writes
April 6th, 2010Christianity is a religion of soul and body. It is at the heart of our faith that “The Word was made flesh”. The All-Holy God truly entered into this world of ours, a world of flesh and blood. He became truly “one of us”. He lived a fully human life. He was tired and hungry, He knew fear and loneliness. He suffered and died, experiencing to the full the pain of a terrible death. In the body, He rose from the dead. The hands that washed the feet of the disciples in the upper room were the same hands that were nailed to the cross, and it was those same hands that the Risen Lord showed to Thomas:
“See here are my hands. Doubt no longer but believe”.
Words are not adequate to describe the wonder of the Resurrection, but from the very beginning it has been the faith of the Church that it was much more than just a spiritual experience of the Apostles. It is not just that the Apostles became convinced that in some mysterious way Jesus was still alive, and that His spirit lived on. The Apostles met the Risen Lord and met him in His Risen Body. That body was wonderfully changed, but it was still the same body in which He had lived and died. The Word was made flesh, and lived among us. In that flesh He died, and in that flesh He has Risen to a new and glorious life.
On behalf of all the priests, I wish you all a very happy and blessed Easter.
